时间状语从句就是用表示时间的连词连接一个句子作状语，常见地连接时间状语从句的连接词有：when, before, after, while, as, until, since…等等。其中while和when、as的用法常常被混淆。 下面我们来看看它们之间的区别： （1） While 和 as 只能和延续性动词连用，而when既能够和连续性动词使用，也可以和终止性动词使用： I stopped eating when she came in. She walked in the room while I was eating. He came in as we were dancing.

（2） When从句的谓语动词可以在主句谓语动作之前、之后或同时发生；while和as从句的谓语动作必须是和主句谓语动作同时发生。例如： When I got to the airport，the guests had left. I was doing my homework while she was reading the book. The students took notes as they listened. 注意，当主句、从句动作同时进行，但是从句的动作时间淡化，主要表现主句动作发生的背景和条件时，只能用as，表示“随着……”之意。如： As years go by，China is getting stronger and richer.

（3） 如果从句和主句的动作同时发生，两句都用过去进行时的时候，多用while引导，如： They were singing while we were dancing.

（4） 一些情况只用when，不用while： 在将来时从句中，常用when，且从句须用一般时代替将来时，例如：You can borrow the book when I have finished reading it． 表示一……就……的句型：She had hardly entered the room when the phone rang.
