一般过去时的定义是用来表示过去某个时间内发生的动作或者是状态，一般过去时的用法经常与表示过去的时间状语一起使用。比如He came here yesterday意思就是他昨天来的，We visited Paris last week意思就是我们上周去了巴黎。

一般过去时的基本结构是这样的：主语+was/were/did+其他成分，比如She was at the party yesterday evening表示的是昨天晚上她在聚会上，They went to the park this Friday表示的是他们这星期五去了公园，He told me that I could leave for Shanghai表示的是他告诉我不能离开上海。

一般过去时的用法主要有这两种：一是表示过去某个时间会发生的状态或者是动作，比如The dog had a house of its own just now意思为刚刚这只狗有了它自己的房子，She came to see me yesterday afternoon意思是她昨天下午来看我了。

二是表示过去习惯性或者是经常性的状态或者是动作，比如I smoked a lot when I was a college student意思就是当我是个大学生的时候我抽烟比较多，You were always at home on weekends last month意思就是以上个月的周末总是待在家里。

在此大家要注意的是过去习惯的表达经常是会用到used to do，但是这个短语表示的意思为以前有某个习惯但是现在没有了，比如He used to smoke a lot意思就是他过去烟瘾很大（但是现在没有了）。

一般过去时的标志性短语：

yesterday系列比如yesterday（昨天）、yesterday morning/afternoon/evening（昨天早上/下午/晚上）、the day before yesterday（前天）等，比如I met an old friend on the street the day before yesterday表示前天我在街上遇到了一个老友，The band gave a performance at the bar yesterday evening表示昨天酒吧有乐队演出。

last系列比如last Wednesday（上星期三）、 last week（上周）、last month（上个月）、last summer（去年夏天）、last yea（去年等，比如She left for Beijing on business last week（她上周去北京出差了）。
